The Algarve

This weekend was our trip the Lagos. I was extremely excited because I had heard so much about the Algarve and how beautiful it is. I was also excited to be in the warm weather with a lot of beaches. We had to take a four hour bus ride down from Lisbon. This entire experience made me realize that I'm not fond of public transportation. There's so many variables that could go wrong. The bus could be really late, so you miss an appointment. There could be a lot of traffic that the bus can't get through as easily as a car would. I also get really sick when riding on buses, trains, or boats. Having said all that, the first few hours of the bus ride was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I watched some movies, which helped make the time go faster. When we finally got there it was around 10:30 pm and I was ready to go to bed. Thankfully, we did.

The next day, Dr. Page and Tana took us on a boat tour and kayak tour. The guys did the kayaks while Kami and I did the boat tour. We were able to see the coast of Lagos. There were a lot of caves and alcoves that we were able to see. It was so beautiful. The water was a light blue and it had a nice contrast with the color of the rocks. The water was freezing cold, so I didn't really want to get in. That all changed, however, when we went to Benagil.

The Benagil caves are breathtaking. The only way to get to them, however, was to pay 15 euros to take a boat, rent a paddle board, or swim. As college students, we like to be cheap. We decided to swim the 200 meter to the cave. I took swimming lessons growing up so I know how to swim, or at least I thought I did. As soon as I got in the water I could barely move. It was freezing cold until my entire body got accustomed to it, or it was numb. We all made it to the caves, even though we were tired, out of breath, and physically drained, it was worth it. Swimming back to the beach was much easier than swimming to the cave. We were swimming with the currents so it helped us conserve energy. I couldn't believe we did that, especially since I'm terrified of the ocean. It made me think about conquering fears. There are things I haven't done because I was too afraid. Before I came on this internship, I made a promise to myself that I would step out of my comfort zone and try new things, that includes conquering my fears. I kept telling myself to look towards the goal. Seeing the caves would be a once in a lifetime experience and I was not going to let fear stop me from that.

Once we were rested and semi-dry, we went back to the train station to go to Lagos. We had about 45 minutes before the train came so we just started talking. Before I knew it, we were teaching Matthew how to dance. I love dancing. I have been dancing for 14 years and I don't know what I would do without it. I haven't had a lot of experience in partner dancing, though. Out of all of us, Danny was probably the most experienced in Latin dancing. I helped him teach Matt how to do simple steps. I couldn't stop laughing the entire time! We had a blast and as a bonus, it made the time go by faster. I am so grateful for this group. They make me laugh and feel comfortable. We all have a good time together and we really clicked from the beginning. I believe we were all meant to meet each other here on this internship. Kami had asked a couple times "Why am I here?" and I strongly believe it was because we all needed each other in our lives. I know we will be friends for a long time and I hope we can all continue to love and accept each other as Christ would.
